The inspired words were written by Robert Burns and entitled "Address of Bruce to his Troops". They were delivered to Burns' friend Mr Syme on 2nd August 1793. The song refers to the confrontation at Bannockburn in the summer of 1314 between Robert Bruce and Edward II of England when, under Bruce's leadership, Scotland regained her freedom. A statue twenty feet high of Bruce, sculpted by Pilkington Jackson was errected at Bannockburn in 1964.
