I'll Gie You A Penny Worth O'Preens
Anonymous

I'll gie you a pennyworth o' preens,
That's aye the way that love begins,
If you walk wi' me ladye,
If you'll walk wi' me ladye.

I'll no hae your pennyworth o' preens,
That's no the way that love begins;
And I'll no walk wi' you, wi' you,
I'll no walk wl' you, wil you.

I'll gie you a bonnie siller box
Wi' seven siller hinges and seven siller locks,
If you'll walk wi' me, ladye,
If you'll walk wi' me, ladye.

I'll no hae your bonnie siller box
Wi' seven siller hinges and seven siller locks,
And I'll no walk wi' you, wi' you,
I'll no walk wi' you, wi' you.

I'll gie you the hale o' Bristol town,
Wi' coaches rolling up and down,
If you'll walk wi' me, ladye,
If you'll walk wl' me ladye.

If you'll gie me the hale o' Bristol town,
Wi' coaches rolling up and down
I will walk wi' you, wi' you,
I will walk wi' you, wi' you.

This is a Scottish version of a song found in England, America and Canada, and in many different, though similar versions. In some versions the song takes the form of a dialogue between the man and his lady, each taking a verse in turn. Here the lady is singularly chilly until the rather expensive last verse.
